Golden Passionfruit (Passiflora edulis f.flavicarpa)
Golden Passionfruit - Exotic Tropical Fruit - Cape Tribulation

Large smooth gold skinned passionfruit with very sweet juicy flesh. Completely different to the purple shrivelled passionfruit of the southern markets.

Soil
Characteristics

Tolerant of a wide range of soil types, provided good drainage is available.

Climate Requirements

Best grown in the subtropics as high rainfall and humidity leads to fungal problems. Tolerant of light frost. Warm temperatures give a higher growth rate and therefore more fruit.

Culture

Best propagated by grafting due to highly variable production from seedling stock. Grown on a trellis with plants spaced at 4 m. Pruned early to one major stem and sideshoots following the trellis.

Harvesting

Fruit are sweetest when allowed to fall, but they must be collected daily in hot weather to avoid sunburn.

Length of time
until first crop

This is dependent on temperature and growth rate, but vines should start flowering at 2 years old.

Marketing Notes

Fruit can be stored for 4 - 5 weeks if kept at 5 C and 80%RH. Pulp and juices are normally extracted, heat sterilized and frozen.

Food Preparation

Best eaten fresh, but widely used as juice and pulp in yoghurts, icecream, jams, flavouring, and in fruit juices.
