Produces round, purple-black fruits which are like cherries with soft, melting, sweet flesh. Comes from Brazil.

 

Soil
Characteristics
Tolerant of a wide range of soil types.
Climate Requirements Generally tolerant of low temperatures.

Culture

The tree grows to about 4 m. Its dense foliage making it very suitable for use as a hedge.
Harvesting Fruit are picked when fully coloured, but are soft and easily damaged by rough handling.
Length of time
until first crop
Seedlings fruit at 5 years old.
Marketing Notes High labour costs for undamaged fruit and for processing make this a home garden tree with little commercial potential.

 

Food Preparation

Great to eat fresh and makes a very acceptable jelly.
