The Solar Power System at Cape Tribulation

There is no grid power at Cape Tribulation. Most of the electrical power at Cape Trib Exotic Fruit Farm comes from an array of solar panels on the verandah roof, with a back up of a diesel generator for times of heavy demand, like big power tools and the water pump.

There are 20 panels, each theoretically capable of producing 80 watts in full sun. They never reach this potential, usually operating at about 60 watts, probably because they get too hot.

Current generated during the day is stored in a 12 volt battery bank. The battery delivers 12 volts DC to an inverter that converts this to 240 Volts AC to supply the house and cabin.

The inverter is limited to about 1200 watts total at any one time, with the refrigerators needing about half this total. The battery has a 1200 Amp Hour capacity, but to extend the life of the battery, no more than one third of this should be used, so the real capacity is 400 Amp hours.

Our typical daily usage is around 150 Amp hours, while the panels are capable of putting in 540 Amp hours over 6 hours of full sunshine. Regulators on the system prevent the battery from being overcharged, so these usually shut down the panels in the early afternoon. Even on a fully overcast day, the panels put in around 20 amps of current, which over 6 hours would be 120 amp hours almost the daily usage.

If you are interested in how all this works, Digby will be delighted to take you on the 'guided tour'.
