Sweetsop (Annona squamosa)

Fruit is heart-shaped and has purple lumpy skin with a very sweet flesh. Comes from Central America.

Soil
Characteristics
Free draining but moist.
Climate Requirements Warm humid areas - can grow in most parts of the tropics and subtropics. Needs high humidity for good fruit set.

Culture

Vulnerable to wind due to shallow root system, and frost sensitive. Roots are also easily effected by fungi when damaged or waterlogged. Prune back long branches and thin centre. Feed regularly.
Harvesting Most fruit matures in autumn although fruit can form at any time. Picked when the skin colour pales between the lumps. Ripens to soft within 2 days.
Length of time
until first crop
Three years. Grafting is recommended.
Marketing Notes High level of acceptability at the fruit tastings. Difficult to transport long distances due to rapid softening and internal breakdown. Too many seeds.

Food Preparation

Excellent eating quality when fruit are fresh provided you are sitting outside and can simply spit out the seeds. Very tasty puree once skin and seeds are removed.
